Image Converter
Convert between JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and ICO in one place.
Different jobs want different formats. Your website wants WebP, your printer wants PNG, the upload form wants JPG, and your favicon wants ICO. This converter handles all of them without you installing anything.
Picking the right format
| Format | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photographs, anything going in an email | No transparency; quality drops a little on every save |
| PNG | Logos, screenshots, transparent graphics | Large files for photographic content |
| WebP | Almost everything on a website | Some desktop software still refuses to open it |
| GIF | Short animations and simple graphics | Only 256 colours, so photos look banded |
| BMP | Legacy Windows software and some hardware | Enormous files, essentially uncompressed |
| ICO | Favicons and Windows icons | Must be square, and tiny sizes need simple artwork |
Converting an image
- Drop your image into the box above.
- Choose the output format you need.
- Set a quality level if the target format is lossy.
- Convert, then check the preview and the new file size.
- Download the converted image.
A rule of thumb that covers most decisions
If it is a photograph and it is going on the web, use WebP with JPG as a fallback. If it has a transparent background or crisp text, use PNG, or lossless WebP if you are confident about support. If somebody outside your control has to open it, send a JPG. That single paragraph settles the vast majority of format questions.
The one thing worth avoiding is repeatedly converting between lossy formats. Every round trip through JPEG or lossy WebP discards a little more detail, and it compounds. Keep a lossless master and export from that.
Things the converter will not do
- It cannot add detail back to an image that has already been compressed hard.
- It cannot create transparency where none existed — you need an editor for that.
- It cannot make a JPG smaller than physics allows without visible artefacts.
- It will not turn an animated GIF into an animated JPG, because that does not exist.
- It will not upscale a tiny image into a usable large one.
Format conversion questions
Which image format is best overall?
There is no single winner, which is why all of them still exist. WebP is the strongest general choice for the web, PNG is the safest for graphics with transparency, and JPG is the most universally compatible.
Does converting between formats lose quality?
Converting to a lossless format such as PNG loses nothing. Converting to JPG or lossy WebP discards some data. Converting from lossy to lossless preserves the image as it currently is, but cannot recover what an earlier compression pass removed.
Why did my transparent background turn white?
Because you converted to JPG or BMP, neither of which supports transparency. Use PNG, WebP or GIF if you need the background to stay see-through.
Can I convert a batch of images at once?
This tool works one file at a time. For a folder full of images, a desktop application or a command-line tool such as ImageMagick will be much faster.
Are my images uploaded to your servers?
Yes. Your images are sent to our server for conversion and are not retained once processed.
