You saved an image from a website, and now Photoshop, your printer driver, or that one stubborn piece of software just shrugs at it. That is the WebP problem in a nutshell: brilliant on the web, still awkward everywhere else. Converting it to PNG solves it in one step.

Why so many programs still choke on WebP

WebP was designed for browsers, and browsers adopted it quickly. The rest of the software world has moved much more slowly. Plenty of desktop image editors, older versions of Office, print shops, e-signature tools and CMS upload forms still reject .webp outright.

PNG, by contrast, is universally understood and has been for twenty-five years. Converting WebP to PNG is lossless in the sense that nothing further is discarded, and crucially it keeps the transparency intact.

How to convert WebP to PNG

  1. Select the WebP file, or drag it into the box above.
  2. Press convert — there is nothing to configure.
  3. Download the PNG.
  4. Check the transparency if the original had any; it should come through untouched.
  5. Open it in whichever program was refusing the WebP.

When you will need this conversion

  • Opening a downloaded image in Photoshop, GIMP or an older design tool.
  • Uploading to a form or CMS that only whitelists JPG and PNG.
  • Sending artwork to a print shop, which will almost always want PNG or TIFF.
  • Inserting an image into a Word document or PowerPoint deck on an older install.
  • Attaching to an email where the recipient may not be able to preview WebP.

What to expect from the file size

The PNG will be bigger — sometimes a lot bigger. That is the price of a format that stores every pixel literally. If you only need the image for compatibility rather than for the web, that is a perfectly reasonable trade. Just do not upload the PNG back to your site in place of the WebP.

WebP to PNG questions

Is transparency preserved?

Yes. Both formats support a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas survive the conversion exactly as they were.

Will I lose quality?

The conversion itself discards nothing. If the WebP was made with lossy compression, the PNG faithfully preserves that already-compressed image — it cannot restore what was lost earlier, but it adds no new loss.

Why is the PNG file so much larger?

PNG is lossless and considerably less efficient than WebP. A 200 KB WebP becoming a 900 KB PNG is entirely normal.

Can I convert an animated WebP?

Animated WebP is closer to a GIF than a still image, and PNG cannot hold an animation. You will typically get the first frame only; convert to GIF if you need the motion.

Does this work on my phone?

Yes. It works on mobile the same way as on desktop; your file is processed on the server and is not retained.
