Remove Line Breaks
Strip line breaks from pasted text and get one clean paragraph.
Copy a paragraph out of a PDF and paste it anywhere else, and it often arrives broken into a dozen short lines — one per line of the original page layout, rather than one per actual sentence. This tool joins it back into a normal paragraph.
Why PDFs and old documents do this
A PDF has no concept of a flowing paragraph the way a word processor does. Text is placed at fixed positions on the page, and many PDF readers insert a line break wherever a visual line ends, whether or not that is where a sentence actually ends. Extract the text and you get a hard break after every line of the printed page, not after every sentence.
The same thing happens with old plain-text emails, which were often manually wrapped at 72 or 80 characters, and with text copied out of some note-taking apps that store line breaks as part of the formatting rather than as a visual wrap.
Cleaning up broken text
- Paste the text with the unwanted line breaks into the box.
- Choose whether to replace each break with a space or remove it entirely with nothing in its place.
- Choose whether to preserve paragraph breaks — the blank lines that separate actual paragraphs — while removing the single breaks inside each one.
- Run the cleanup.
- Copy the resulting single block of text.
Where this comes up most
- Pasting a quote or excerpt copied out of a PDF into an article or email.
- Cleaning up an old plain-text email before quoting it somewhere formatted.
- Preparing scraped or copied web content for a script that expects one line per record, not per sentence fragment.
- Fixing text copied from a terminal or code editor where soft wraps were saved as hard breaks.
- Tidying poetry-formatted prose — a paragraph that someone manually broke into short lines for readability — back into normal sentences.
The setting that trips people up
Replacing every line break with nothing, rather than a space, is the single most common mistake here. Do that to a PDF export and the last word of one line gets glued directly onto the first word of the next, producing nonsense like “sentence.Thenext” with no space between them. Replace breaks with a single space instead, and let the tool collapse any resulting double spaces, and the output reads normally.
Remove line breaks questions
Will this also remove blank lines between paragraphs?
Only if you choose that option. The default behaviour is to remove single breaks within a paragraph while leaving the blank line between paragraphs intact, since that is usually what people want to keep.
Why does my text stick together with no spaces after cleaning?
You likely chose to delete breaks entirely rather than replace them with a space. Switch to the space-replacement option and rerun it — that adds the missing gap between the last word of one line and the first word of the next.
Does this work on text copied from a PDF?
Yes, that is one of the most common uses. PDF text extraction routinely inserts a break at the end of every visual line, and this tool joins those back into flowing paragraphs.
Can I remove line breaks from just part of a document?
Paste only the section you want cleaned. The tool processes exactly what you give it, so selecting and pasting a single paragraph leaves the rest of your document untouched.
Is there a limit on how much text I can paste?
No fixed limit is enforced, though pasting an extremely large document, tens of thousands of words, will simply take your browser a moment longer to process.
