Converting JPG to PNG is not about making the picture better — whatever the JPEG already threw away is gone for good. It is about stopping the bleeding. From the moment you save as PNG, every future edit and re-save keeps the pixels exactly as they are.

What you actually gain by switching to PNG

JPEG is lossy, and it is lossy every single time you save. Open a JPG, crop it, save it, open it again, adjust the brightness, save again — and you have quietly degraded the image twice. Do that a dozen times and you will start to see blocky smudging around edges.

PNG never does this. It is lossless, so the hundredth save is pixel-for-pixel identical to the first. If a picture is going through a round of edits, converting it to PNG first is a small habit that saves a lot of regret.

Converting a JPEG to PNG

  1. Select the JPG you want to convert, or drag it onto the box above.
  2. Press convert. There is no quality setting, because PNG does not discard anything.
  3. Download the resulting PNG file.
  4. Expect it to be larger — often several times larger. That is normal and it is the trade you are making.
  5. Use it as your working copy from here on, and export a fresh JPG only when you publish.

Good reasons to convert JPG to PNG

  • You are about to edit the image — PNG protects it from accumulating compression damage across multiple saves.
  • You need to add transparency — you cannot cut out a background and keep it transparent in a JPG. Convert first, then erase.
  • It is going into a design tool — Figma, Illustrator and InDesign all behave better with lossless source files.
  • It contains text or a screenshot — PNG keeps letterforms sharp instead of surrounding them with the faint halo JPEG leaves behind.
  • A platform demands PNG — some app stores, print services and ad networks simply will not accept JPEG uploads.

One thing worth being clear about

Converting to PNG cannot undo JPEG compression. If the original is already soft or shows blocky artefacts in the sky, the PNG will preserve those artefacts perfectly. Think of it as sealing the image at its current quality, not restoring it.

Questions people ask about JPG to PNG

Does converting JPG to PNG improve the image?

No, and it is worth being honest about that. It preserves what is there and prevents further loss, but any detail the JPEG already discarded is unrecoverable. No format conversion can bring it back.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

Because it is storing every pixel exactly, with no shortcuts. A photo that compresses to 800 KB as a JPEG can easily reach 5 MB as a PNG. That is the cost of lossless.

Will converting to PNG give my image a transparent background?

Not by itself. PNG is capable of transparency, but the conversion only changes the container. You still have to remove the background yourself in an editor afterwards.

Which is better for a website, PNG or JPG?

For photographs, JPG or WebP, because the files are far smaller and page speed matters. For logos, icons, screenshots and anything needing transparency, PNG.

Is the conversion done privately?

Your image is uploaded to our server to perform the conversion, then discarded immediately without being stored.
