Convert seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks and years in either direction.
A video is timestamped 7,384 seconds in. Nobody thinks in seconds at that scale — you want to know it is 2 hours, 3 minutes and 4 seconds, and getting there by hand means three separate divisions most people get wrong on the first try.
Why an hour has 60 minutes and not 100
Blame the Sumerians and Babylonians, who built a counting system in base 60 around 3000 BCE rather than the base 10 almost everyone uses today. Sixty is a useful base because it divides evenly by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20 and 30 — far more factors than ten has, which made it genuinely convenient for splitting time, angles and circles without fractions.
That sexagesimal system is why a clock has 60 minutes and 60 seconds instead of a tidy metric 100, and why a circle has 360 degrees. Several attempts to decimalise time, including a French revolutionary calendar with 10-hour days, were tried and abandoned within a few years — the old Babylonian system was simply too deeply embedded to replace.

Where exact time conversion actually matters
- Video and podcast editing, converting a raw seconds count into a readable hh:mm:ss timestamp.
- Project and contract work billed in fractions of an hour, where 45 minutes needs to become 0.75 hours on an invoice.
- Endurance sport results, converting a finish time in seconds into minutes and seconds for a leaderboard.
- Scientific and engineering work quoting durations in years that actually need converting down to seconds for a calculation.
The wrinkle nobody accounts for: leap seconds
A calendar year is not quite 365 days — it is 365.2422, which is why leap years exist. Even that does not fully capture reality: Earth’s rotation is slightly irregular, so since 1972 timekeepers have occasionally inserted a leap second into UTC to keep clock time aligned with the planet’s actual spin. Twenty-seven leap seconds were added between 1972 and 2016, none since, and international standards bodies voted in 2022 to phase the practice out by 2035 rather than keep patching the clock by the second.
Time conversion questions
How many seconds are in a day?
86,400 — 24 hours times 60 minutes times 60 seconds. It is one of the most useful figures to just memorise if you work with timestamps regularly.
How do I convert decimal hours to hours and minutes?
Keep the whole number as hours, then multiply the decimal part by 60 to get minutes. So 3.25 hours is 3 hours plus 0.25 × 60 = 15 minutes, giving 3 hours 15 minutes.
Why is a year sometimes 365 days and sometimes 366?
Earth takes about 365.2422 days to orbit the sun, not a clean 365. Leap years add an extra day roughly every four years to stop the calendar slowly drifting out of sync with the seasons.
What is a leap second and why does it exist?
A leap second is an extra second occasionally inserted into official time to correct for Earth’s rotation being slightly irregular and gradually slowing. It keeps atomic clock time aligned with actual solar time, though the practice is being phased out by 2035.
How many hours are in a working year?
A common estimate for a standard 40-hour week is 2,080 hours a year, based on 52 weeks. Subtract public holidays and paid leave and the real annual working hours for most jobs come out closer to 1,900–2,000.
