Stripe Fee Calculator

Work out your Stripe payout after processing fees, in both directions.

Stripe’s pricing is refreshingly simple compared to most processors — a percentage plus a small fixed amount per successful charge. Simple does not mean negligible, though, and on thin margins it is worth knowing the number before you set your prices.

Running the numbers on a charge

  1. Enter the charge amount to see the fee and your net payout.
  2. Or enter your desired net to find the amount you need to charge.
  3. Set the percentage and fixed fee to match your region’s rate card.
  4. Add the international card surcharge where it applies.
  5. Include currency conversion separately if you are settling in a different currency.

The fixed fee is what hurts on small transactions

On a 200 sale, a fixed fee of 0.30 is a rounding error. On a 3 sale it is 10% before the percentage fee even enters the picture. This is why micro-transactions and low-priced digital goods are so hard to make work, and why almost every SaaS product nudges customers towards annual billing.

One annual charge of 240 costs a fraction of what twelve monthly charges of 20 cost in fixed fees. If you sell subscriptions, that alone is often worth a discount for paying yearly.

What adds to the base fee

  • International cards — an additional percentage when the card was issued outside your country.
  • Currency conversion — a further margin if you charge in one currency and settle in another.
  • Disputes — a fixed fee per chargeback, normally retained even if you win.
  • Instant payouts — an optional percentage for getting your money faster than the standard schedule.
  • Additional products — billing, tax and fraud tooling are priced separately from core processing.

Ways to keep processing costs down

  • Encourage annual or quarterly billing instead of monthly, to cut the number of fixed fees.
  • Bundle small purchases into a single larger transaction where it makes sense.
  • Set minimum order values so tiny transactions do not lose money.
  • Reduce failed payments with card updater features — retries cost you nothing but churn does.
  • Price in your customers’ local currency to avoid conversion surprises on their side.

Stripe fee questions

How do I calculate what to charge for a specific payout?

Add the fixed fee to your target, then divide by one minus the percentage rate. Adding the percentage to your target undercharges slightly, because the fee is assessed on the gross amount.

Does Stripe charge for failed payments?

Standard declined charges are not billed. Disputes and chargebacks do carry a fee, and that fee is normally kept by the card networks even when the dispute is resolved in your favour.

Why is my payout smaller than charge minus fee?

Check for refunds issued in the same period, dispute fees, and any currency conversion. Payouts are batched, so a single transfer often covers many transactions with adjustments netted against it.

Are fees different for international customers?

Yes. Cards issued outside your country carry an extra percentage, and converting currency adds another margin on top.

Do the rates in this calculator update automatically?

No — set them yourself to match your account’s rate card. Pricing varies by country and changes periodically, so always confirm against your Stripe dashboard.
