Number to Word Converter

Spell out any number in full, exactly as it should read.

A cheque for “1,000” can be altered with a single stroke of a pen into “7,000”. A cheque that also spells out “one thousand” in words cannot be, which is exactly why banks have required the written form for centuries — it is a fraud check built directly into the format.

Why the written form still matters in a digital age

Cheques are less common than they used to be, but the same logic protects legal contracts, promissory notes, and formal invoices, where the numeral and the written word both appear specifically so any tampering with one shows up as a mismatch against the other. Courts generally treat the written words as authoritative if the two ever disagree.

Getting the spelling exactly right matters more than it seems. “Fifteen” and “fifty” differ by one letter and a factor of over three; a transposed digit in a numeral is often easier to catch than a single mis-typed word.

How the conversion works

  1. Type or paste in a number, positive or negative, with or without decimals.
  2. The tool breaks it into groups of three digits — ones, thousands, millions and so on.
  3. Each group is spelled out using standard English number words.
  4. Group names are inserted between them, and decimals are handled separately as cents or a fractional remainder.

British versus American style, briefly

  • American style typically drops “and”: 101 becomes “one hundred one.”
  • British style traditionally keeps it: 101 becomes “one hundred and one.”
  • Both are understood everywhere in English, but legal and financial documents usually pick one convention and use it consistently throughout.
  • Hyphenation of compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine is standard in both styles.

Number-to-word questions

Why do cheques require the amount written out in words?

Because a numeral is trivially easy to alter with an added digit or a changed stroke, while a fully spelled-out phrase is much harder to tamper with convincingly. If the numeral and the words on a cheque ever disagree, most banks and courts treat the written words as the legally binding amount.

How do I write a number with cents in words?

Spell out the whole-dollar amount, then typically write “and xx/100” or spell out the cents separately — for example, $42.50 becomes “forty-two and 50/100 dollars” on most cheque formats. Conventions vary slightly by country and by the specific form being filled in.

What is the difference between British and American number-word style?

The main difference is the word “and”: British style writes 350 as “three hundred and fifty,” while American style typically omits it, writing “three hundred fifty.” Both are grammatically understood in either country, but formal documents usually stay consistent with one convention.

How are large numbers like millions and billions grouped in words?

English breaks numbers into groups of three digits from the right, each assigned a name — thousand, million, billion, trillion, and so on. 1,234,567 becomes “one million, two hundred thirty-four thousand, five hundred sixty-seven,” following the same three-digit grouping the numerals themselves use.

Can this convert negative numbers and decimals into words?

Yes. A negative number is prefixed with “negative” or “minus,” and a decimal is typically read digit by digit after the word “point,” or converted to a fraction like cents when the context is financial rather than purely mathematical.
